The Cedar River Quilters of Renton, Washington held the first meeting of the new year at a new location. After several years at the Renton Salvation Army Church, we have relocated to the Highlands Community Church, also in Renton. Our new president, Chris, welcomed us all back in our new digs.
Our program for January was a presentation by Mackie, Ann, and Sue about the art and history of Sashiko quilting. Sue shared interesting information about the history of Sashiko, and how it developed as a way of creating new warmer garments from worn out clothes. She pointed out that it is not meant to be a quilting method. It has evolved into a beautiful decorative embellishment that may be used in quilts. Mackie shared stories of the Aunt she and Ann share who taught them to do Sashiko. All of them shared beautiful items from simple blocks, to purses, to large quilts that are all embellished with this art form. The three ladies are going to lead a workshop in Sashiko at our first Tuesday meeting in February.
Just a few of the many beautiful pieces the ladies shared.
The block of the month for January is Evening Star. It is fun and easy to make.
